Book Review: Troop 6000

Troop 6000 The Girl Scout Troop That Began In A Shelter And Inspired The World, tells the story of Giselle Burgess a young mother of five who is living in a temporary shelter, and is inspired to start a Girl Scout troop. The story is truly enthralling. I found myself unable to put it down over the course of several days- while also anxiously waiting for my order of Troop 6000 cookies to arrive. It highlights the anxieties of modern motherhood amidst every day challenges; which become increasingly cumbersome while striving to get ahead, and stay ahead despite ever looming set backs.

The history of the Girl Scouts and its original vision is highlighted. I found the mention of NIMBY protestors to be of particular interest. This is a book that clearly demonstrates the worthiness and plight of many families in any “backyard” in America striving to keep their head above water.

The strength and joy of each character shines incredibly bright, Nikita Stewart’s ability as a wordsmith and crafting a clear voice is in itself a true pleasure.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who looks forward to Girl Scout cookie season, and relishes at the opportunity to tuck away a box of thin mints in the back of their freezer for a rainy day.

Every girl deserves to be a leader. She deserves to get that courage, confidence, and character to go out there and make the world a better place, whether you have a home or not is not important to us.
